On the back of two home losses it was a refreshing change to win a club men’s match. Obviously DDGC is a better away team and in spite of some interesting bounces on a course that obviously needed some rain the team came out as 61/2 matches to 1/2 victors.
Unusually for these matches there were two juniors competing and they obviously enjoyed themselves immensely-this was the first time that Alexander Winter and Sam Harris had represented the club at such a level and in spite of being very nervous on the first tee they acquitted themselves very well. Their actual junior match was declared a half as there was some mix up in the shot allocation however the experience was something they will remember for some time.
The Captain and vice-Captain’s game was a tight one as they were 2 down at the turn with the Beds and County Captain (Steve Holloway) playing virtual par golf off his 9 handicap. However after the refreshment hut which obviously installed a new lease of life into Graham and Dave the 2 up deficit was reversed by the end of the game.
In general there were some tight matches and Dave Gilligan and Phil Murphy just managed to hold onto a one hole difference in the last match to allow the team to end up with an impressive victory.
Unfortunately the scratch B team did not emulate the Club team as they were co-incidentally playing Beds and County in the morning. They lost 5 nil.
Ross Jones played in this match but he also subsequently played in the social club match so we think that he slept well after that marathon.
