Match against Whipsnade Park – Saturday 4 June 2011
The first part of the home and away fixture for the Whipdown cup was played on Saturday at Dunstable Downs.
Apart from a mild wind which is usually present at Dunstable the weather was good for golf with the course in excellent condition
Unfortunately Dunstable came off second best losing the match by 3 and a half games to two and a half. The Captain and the Vice captain won their match as well as Peter Mooney and Mick Filby and Bob Jackson and new boy Mike Gaunt made a very creditable half-the rest tried hard and there were some very close matches however the team take a negative position into the second leg which will take place on the 10th September at Whipsnade.
Dunstable are the current holders so if they can reverse the score on the away leg they will still keep hold of the trophy however they have an uphill battle to face.
Strict training for the team for the next few weeks is to be recommended!
Mixed match against Letchworth – Sunday 5 June 2011
Dunstable put in what appeared to be a strong team to face Letchworth at Letchworth on Sunday. However it appears that the home side was even stronger. Once again all of the matches were very close with the eighteenth hole usually being needed to find the result of the matches. However Letchworth ran out worthy winners by 8 games to 4.
The weather just about held out with just a few showers before the end –The Golf Course however needed some rain as cracks were appearing in the fairways however the greens were extremely good.
This was a fixture where both teams could measure each other up prior to the prestigious 4 clubs competition which will be held at Dunstable next week. The last time that Dunstable won this was during the centenary year when the Competition was held at Dunstable-so we look to an improvement from the team.
It was however a great day with our thanks to Letchworth for being such excellent hosts.
