Dunstable Downs pair in winning Pro-am team at Carnoustie

Deborah and Doug Chalmers formed half of the team that won the Pro-Am which preceded the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Carnoustie on Tuesday 26th July. The other 2 players in the team were Colin Griffiths [from Woburn GC] and our female Professional Stacey Lewis [fresh from her 2nd place in the Evian masters the week before] plus her caddy Travis.

The picture shows the team on the course at the completion of their round; [L-R Colin, Stacey, Deborah, Doug]  The weather was that sunny with only a slight breeze so playing conditions, by normal Scottish links standards, were very benign.

The format was the best 2 nett scores from 4 on each hole. The team started on the 5th hole [it was a shot gun start] and with 2 pars on that hole they then had 2 birdies on the long par 5, 6th.  Although not scoring too well in the middle of the round the team kept up a reasonable scoring rate and finished with a 89 [17 points over level 4’s].   Colin kept asking what the losers would get, and Deborah just wanted to play well and enjoy the day.   After the game had been completed it was another hour before the leader board was displayed in the Ricoh Pavilion and the team realised they had actually won! The first prize was a Titleist D2 adjustable driver plus a leather brief case for each amateur.

The team had been entered the previous Wednesday as a result of Doug bidding for, and winning, a silent auction after the Gary Player Invitational [played at Wentworth on Monday the 18th July].  So 8 days from bidding to taking part and winning. A super day was enjoyed by Deborah, Colin & Doug our 3 Amateurs, Stacey and Travis, our Professionals with excellent hospitality & organisation from Ricoh and the Carnoustie hosts.
