In spite of the considerable distance between the two clubs the match against Leamington and County Golf Club remains one of the most popular events in the golfing calendar. The Team sheet was oversubscribed in a matter of days as members fought to be included.
Unfortunately one or two were disappointed however there remained several who had enjoyed the coach trip up to Leamington for many years and have always enjoyed the close companionship that this match has engendered.
The origination of this fixture was in 1993 when Eric Jones who was a previous member of Dunstable suggested to the then current Captain John Cole that it would be great to have a fixture between the two clubs and so it began- although originally this was played annually on a home and away basis. The ‘Jones Jigger’ was made into a trophy after a couple of years of battle and Leamington seemed to triumph with monotonous regularity over the first 7 matches however in the recent past Dunstable have been triumphant and indeed were the holders before the current match.
Unfortunately for Dunstable members in spite of a tremendous attempt where many games went to the 18th- the Trophy went back on the coach to Leamington as the team lost 6 games to 4.
I am sure that the team will do its utmost next year to wrestle the trophy back to Dunstable as there is a significant patch on the wall that now needs repainting after the loss of the trophy this year.
