Junior success in Ver League Plate final

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Think back to 1998. The Spice Girls were #1 in the music charts; Barry Potter, Club President and great supporter of the juniors, wasn’t even on the committee and GB were hosting the Eurovision Song Contest having won it the previous year. I know…that far back. 13 long years later and the current crop of DDGC juniors have finally grasped the nettle to win their first piece of silverware.

Playing against a strong Redbourn team with an average handicap of 8, the DDGC juniors ran out eventual winners in the Ver League Plate final 9 to 5. According to Mark Knight, Redbourn JO, “It was a great day and apart from a gale force wind John Winter and Dunstable Downs Golf Club were the perfect hosts. Sadly Redbourn suffered their heaviest defeat of the whole season but my congratulations go to John and his team of talented juniors for dealing with the conditions better than the Redbourn players did” He added, “I feared the worst when you drew with us at our place. Our team simply could not cope with the wind”

12 players have represented DDGC in the Ver League this year and each and every one of them has played their part in this year’s success. Talk about being an eclectic mix, our team comprised a 10 year old girl and a boy who has only been playing competitively 6 months. I had faith in his form but I did question my judgement when he said to me last week, “I have only played off the white tees once before” He went on to win 7&6 in his match!

If you get the opportunity, come along to the club’s presentation night on Sunday 16th October (Starts at 7pm) to share in their success.

Mixed Match Against Leighton Buzzard

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Whilst the Juniors were going to battle in the Ver League Plate final on Sunday- the ‘slightly older team’ played in the final club match of the year at Leighton Buzzard.

With 2 games still to come in it looked as though Dunstable were going to enjoy the spoils but the last two matches went in favour of the home team. So the honourable draw that we often state at the end of these matches irrespective of the scores ended up as indeed an honourable draw at 5 matches each.

Captain Graham and the Lady Captain Kate ended a sequence of 2 years of invincibility for the L.B. Captain David Hawkins and his lady Captain Paula Cox and Graham Sheldon and Pam Gaunt as well as Dave Thompson and Barbara Sheldon and Julian Richards and Adrienne Lane were well deserved winners and with 2 matches halved the result was satisfactory to both teams.

The Captain would like to thank all of those who played in the matches this year. He is sure that you will offer the same support to Dave Price next year. These club matches are so enjoyable and do enhance the camaraderie and spirit of friendly rivalry between the various clubs in the area.

Mixed match against The Bedfordshire Golf Club

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

After a few defeats in the men’s matches it was a welcome change for Dunstable to end up as victors in the mixed match against The Bedfordshire.

All of the team performed well with the exception of the Captain and Lady Captain who were the only pair to lose. There were three other halves but Dunstable ended up as victors by nine and a half points to two and a half.

So congratulations to the team. The weather was gorgeous and the course looked in fine condition as remarked upon by the Bedfordshire Vice Captain Roger Willis.

Roger vowed to get his own back at The Bedfordshires next year when Dave Price will then be Captain.

This was our Captain-Graham Tate’s last home match so it is great to end up with a win.
