Waterlogged course leads to Junior Captains Day postponement
Sunday, June 24th, 2012DDGC has once again succumbed to bad weather as Captain Dave Price reluctantly cancelled Junior Captains Day because of a waterlogged course. When the players arrived in the morning sunshine they could not have expected such a disappointing outcome but rain from 6pm the night before made the decision inevitable
John Winter, Junior Organiser
said, “I just couldn’t believe it. 34 players had entered this year and having played the course the day before I knew that it was in ‘tip top’ condition and with the breeze a real test. Captain Dave Price has quickly rescheduled the event for the next available day; Sunday 16th September”
John added, “I would like to extend my thanks to the members of DDGC who so generously supported the juniors the night before. Over £400 was raised for the prize pool and this has allowed Darren to line up some great prizes. With Captains Day tee pegs and pencils it was all set to be a day to remember…for a different reason”
If you have entered the competition this year your name will be carried over to September. We are mindful of the time of year and how it can encroach on other sporting events but we will make every effort to remain flexible. Looking positively, it will give us the opportunity to see if we can attract some new players too and the sick and absent will have another chance to enter.
How to Rake a Bunker Correctly
Wednesday, June 20th, 2012How to Rake a Bunker Correctly!
1. Before playing your shot, find the best entry and exit point. Avoid walking down a steep face and walking a longer distance than necessary.
2. Enter the bunker with a rake. This is within the rules of golf and speeds up play.
3. Play your shot. You should leave the rake within reaching distance so you don’t have extra sand to rake retrieving it!
4. Smooth over the area where you played your shot and all your footprints. Use two hands. It is not possible to rake the bunker correctly using just one! Do not merely trail the rake behind you as you leave the bunker as this will reduce sand depth. If you are pulling too much sand towards you, push the sand back away from you with the rake.
5. Admire your work. When you are finished, the sand’s surface should be smooth, with no signs of footprints, and no excess sand pulled towards the bunker’s edge. Please ensure that the sand is in as good a condition or better than you found it in.

County Championship
Monday, June 11th, 2012Dunstable Players had great success in the County Championship with 3 players in the top 4.
Bedford and County Golf Club host a successful County & Colts Championship.
Bedford and County Golf Club, in their centenary year, hosted a successful County and Colts Championships. Their course was presented in wonderful condition and members and staff were most accommodating and are thanked for being such great hosts.
Held over the weekend of 9th & 10th June, 42 of the best golfers in the County battled very strong winds in the first round and the difficult conditions were reflected in the scores. The wind eased a little in the afternoon and with the scores improving 21 players made the cut into day 2. Defending Champion, Miguel Moitas (South Beds) with a two round score of 141 held a narrow one shot overnight lead over Rob Sutton (Dunstable Downs) with Mark Carter (Dunstable Downs) four shots back. These three players were grouped together for rounds 3 & 4 on a Sunday which was pleasantly warm, and with little or no wind score continued to improve. Mark Carter had a wonderful third round, shooting a 66 – the low round of the weekend – to overturn the deficit and take a two shot lead into round 4.
These three players continued their fine play into the afternoon with both Rob and Miguel shooting 68′s to Mark’s 71. This fine play made Rob Sutton the Bedfordshire County Champion for 2012.
