There were some tough games played on Knockout Sunday 10th June. Ryan Smith had to play Ryan Shilleto & Jack Flanagan on his own but Jack did his best to even things up by leaving after the 10th hole. Honours were just about even at this stage. But when Jack left you would have thought that the tide would have gone towards the lower handicap player. But Ryan Shilleto dug deep and won the 11th & 12th holes with his shots to create a comfortable gap as the finishing line approached. But Ryan Smith does not give up and he just kept on plugging away and despite losing a ball on the 18th took the game to extra time. At the end and having shouldered the whole match on his own, Ryan Smith couldn’t keep it going as Ryan Shilleto popped up with a birdie 4 on the 1st extra hole to take his team through to the next round
Our on course news reporter was under the impression that Messrs Wright & Black were 5 down with 5 to play against Brad Howard & Ryan Craig when he spoke to them on the 13th tee. So either they played brilliantly on the way back or he had misheard…I guess it was the latter. But they have set themselves up against big hitting Flanagan and Shilleto in what should be a really competitive semi final
Early season favourites Joshua Whinnet and Ben Marshall were 5 up after 4 holes….or at least that was how it felt according to Alex!…as Alex Winter & Jamie Smith couldn’t really get it together at the start. At the 15th they were 2 down with 4 to play so the writing was on the wall. But pars at the next 4 holes (with shots) saw them through by 1 hole at the 18th
Chris Aherne has been quietly getting on and winning in both the singles and the doubles this year and has once again caught the selectors eye. “It was all down to Jonathan Wyllie” he said as they beat ‘in form’ Elliot & George. We shall soon see if this is truth or modesty. I guess all that time with Darren in the pro shop is having a positive affect on his game. The next round should be interesting
The next round needs to be played by the 18th August. This will come around sooner than you think so please check with your partner and opponents now to get a date in the diary
