The Tuesday after the big St Jude storm passed through the region, brought a lovely bright sunny late Autumn morning for the Annual contest between the Junior Section and the Seniors Men (The Downsmen). The opening match saw the new Senior’s Captain, Barry Potter and last year’s Captain, Jim McGuckin, ‘humbled’ by Jim’s Grandson, Charlie Draper and the very much in form Josh Whinnet. Josh was hitting the ball a ‘country mile’, hitting driver and driver again off the fairway on the 3rd Hole to stop inches short of the green in two! He repeated the exercise on the 17th, with a stunning tee shot, almost reaching the green off the tee. The next two matches saw victory to the Downsmen, despite very strong performances from the two junior ladies, Freya Daniels and Natasha Yasinkas, so the match started to get very close and tension was mounting. Young Thomas Hicks then turned in a great performance despite the fact that his partner hadn’t turned up and he managed to win his match with a partner ‘borrowed from the normal Tuesday Seniors group though the general opinion is that he would have won the match on his own! So it all went down to the very last match, where Louie Prewer and Charlie Allen were level with Club Vice President Brian Collins and Mike Crowston with 2 holes left to play. They managed to hold that till the end so the overall match score finished all level at 3.5 to 3.5. A thoroughly enjoyable day and a great match. As the juniors were the trophy holders, they retained the magnificent ‘Downsmen V’s Juniors’ trophy and the photo shows their match Captain, Charlie Draper accepting it from Barry Potter.
